Google Executive Weighs In On AT&T Data Limits
Mike Steib, the Director of Emerging Platforms at Google, briefly offered his opinion on AT&T’s decision to limit data usage among their customers during his keynote at the Mobile Marketing Association’s Mobile Marketing Forum.
“Analysis shows this will affect like 2 percent of users but the trend line shows that more and more people will use more data,” Mr. Steib said, “Data caps make sense when what you are selling is limited.
“I understand the decision by AT&T,” he said. “But for the space more broadly, broadband is really important.”
Steib’s comments reinforce what most in the mobile community are saying. AT&T’s decision is understandable only because it is widely recognized that their current network cannot keep up with the expected growth. However, it is important for AT&T and other carriers to focus their efforts on upgrading their networks so they can support mobile broadband. The future of mobile depends on it.
