Red Cross Uses SMS To Raise $1M For Haiti In Single Day
The American Red Cross issued an SMS call to action yesterday to raise money to help victims of the recent earthquake in Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Consumers can text the keyword HAITI to the short code 90999 to initiate a short confirmation dialog that will allow them to donate $10 to the Red Cross. The $10 will be applied directly to the cell phone bill. The campaign, powered by MGive, set a record making January 13th the largest giving day ever in the history of mobile donations.

In addition to several high profile traditional advertisment vehicles such as television and taxi cabs, the campaign itself has been extremely popular in social networking circles as well.
