Facebook Launches iPad App

For the past two years, I’ve waited for Facebook to launch an iPad app. I was beginning to wonder if they were ever going to create one! Sure enough, last week, Facebook finally released a fully-developed iPad app. I initially felt the delay was attributed to a lack of innovation, but the execution of their app has left me with nothing but positive reviews. In hindsight, I would rather have a product take longer in development in order to a full launch, rather than be rushed into creation with multiple upgrades in the future.

My favorite thing about the new Facebook iPad app is the emphasis on photos. Album by album, image by image, photos are easy to view, share and pass around just like an old-school photo album. I also love the friends list, and how your eyes gravitate toward the images first and the names second. Another aspect I really enjoy is the usability of the touch screen, and how easy it is to move from one section to the next. It reminds me of the Twitter app, which makes scrolling and navigating feel natural and engaging.

With Facebook’s original site to keep the general, online user happy, and a mobile version to keep smart phone users in the know, Facebook now offers true techies a way to stay connected on their iPads. What started as a product for just one device has grown to be supported by three. Any new improvements or upgrades will now have to be passed on to all three versions of Facebook. More than 350 million users currently access Facebook through their mobile devices, and with the addition of the iPad app, Facebook users now have another way to stay in touch. (Facebook.com)

Overall, I think Facebook has pulled off another successful, user-friendly upgrade. Next time, I just hope they don’t fall so far behind on launching such a great tool for a great device.
