Green Saturday

imageThis year St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday and according to the National Retail Federation (NRF), that is going to result in some major spending (story here). A recently completed NRF Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey estimates consumers will spend almost $3.8 million for this occasion, up about 25 percent over last year. According to the results, almost one-third of consumers stated they planned to celebrate the day by attending a party or a bar. Hmmmmm…there are a lot more people of Irish decent in the country than I thought.

And, if there is any thought that this annual March 17 event is going out of favor with the younger set, think again. People 18-24 plan to shell out the most for St. Patrick’s Day with average spending in this age group estimated at over $40 per person.

Someday it would be fun to see how they celebrate the real thing on The Emerald Isle. Also, if you’re feeling the luck o’ the Irish, there are still two days left to win a free round trip for two to Ireland.
