Media by the numbers
The media world has become more fragmented than ever before, providing an array of choices for consumers and advertisers alike. A new national survey from Arbitron and Edison Research provides insight into the use of social networking, mobile phones, television, radio, Wi-Fi and Broadband.
Social Networking
Nearly half (48%) of Americans age 12 and older are now members of at least one social network.
These personal profile pages are maintained by:
78% of teens
77% of 18-24 year olds
65% of 25-34 year olds
51% of 35-44 year olds
Texting
Nearly half of all mobile phone owners age 12 and older text multiple times a day. Other age groups texting several times a day:
75% of teens
76% of 18-24 year olds
63% of 25-34 year olds
42% of 35-44 year olds
37% of 45-54 year olds
Internet
When given the choice between internet, television, radio and newspapers, more Americans say the internet is most essential to their lives.
42% chose the Internet as most essential
37% select television
14% choose radio
5% said newspaper
Television still leads among those over age 45, while Internet dominates among persons age 12-44.
Radio
Nearly eight in ten Americans said they plan to listen to as much AM/FM radio in the future as they do now despite advances of technology.
Wi-Fi
62% of homes with Internet access have wireless networks.
Broadband
84% of homes with Internet access have broadband connections.
