Reality: First Search, then Social, then Porn
Many years ago I remember it still being quoted that a third of the internet was commercial, a third blogs and the such, and the rest was pornorgraphy. Which, to this day still blows my mind… metaphorically. But after talking to friends who were Video Rental store clerks who claimed that the pornography section kept the store afloat, and stats awhile back from MarkeitngVOX noting that for the first time (2007) an age group didn’t prefer pornography to all other things web. The Huffington Post recently noted that this trend has become an epidemic.
That’s right. We’re tweeting & playing Farmville more than we’re viewing porn. Astounding. Progress. I think.
Social media has managed to become the most often visited portion of the web. No wonder it’s on the top of every marketing manager’s to-do list for advertising mediums. It’s the second most visited portion of the second most watched medium. Facebook alone is 50% of all web traffic in the U.K. But All of this is just part of a larger trend against the old standards in marketing, toward “the new PR,” social media and web-based word of mouth. The blog/book Socialnomics did a great job summing up some of the trends and changes we need to anticipate. Check out their “trailer” below:
