When is an Android phone for Verizon finally going to happen?

Believe it or not, it might be sooner than you think…

We have all heard the rumors. The Motorola Shoal. The Motorola Tao. At one point there was speculation of a G2 crossover for Verizon.  But they all remained nothing more than vaporware.  It has to happen eventually though.  The Android platform is a developer’s dream come true, and the open handset alliance is poised to redefine mobile applications.

Enter into the fray the Motorola DRIOD.  BGR reports that it will not only be the first Verizon Android phone but also that it will be officially announced in the second or third week of October.  Phandroid did some digging and discovered that motoroladroid.com is indeed registered to Motorola, so it looks like this may finally be happening.

I question BGR’s believe that it won’t be announced until after next week.  The MOTODEV summit takes place October 6, and they have an entire track dedicated to the Android platform.  Be watching for more news to come out then.
