Wireless Carriers Recorded 10K SMS Donations Per Second
As of Friday, January 15th, SMS donations raised over $11M in support of the Haitian Earthquake Victims. In just three days. On the day of the 15th, wireless carriers recorded an amazing 10K SMS donations every second.
EDIT: As of 7:00 pm on January 19th, mGive is now reporting that over $24M has been raised via SMS donations.
Major carriers, such as Verizon Wireless and Sprint, have even changed their internal billing methods to make sure that the donated relief money gets to Haiti as soon as possible.
It remains to be seen how much money this campaign will bring in before it ends. But the sky is the limit. This further demonstrates the power of mobile. The immediacy and availability of making transactions over a cell phone feed the impulse buyer in all of us. Think of this in comparision… How many of the 1.1 million of us who texted in a donation would have dropped a $10 bill in a donation bucket in the mall? I wouldn’t have.
