Writely is the Word
A great example of “Web as Platform” — one of the foundational concepts of Web 2.0 — is Writely, an online word processor. The site doesn’t have all the features of Microsoft Word, but it will certainly work for most writing situations. Even more appealing, it’s free.
Writely is currently in beta (testing) mode. Once the final version is released, users who pay a fee will have access to premium features such as the ability to create PDF documents.
As an adjunct instructor at a local university, I’ll be recommending Writely to my students, particularly those who can’t afford Microsoft Office for their home PCs.
